Gender Equality Education Forum: “I Have the Power to Say No: Understanding Sexual Harassment”

In light of the recent surge in campus sexual harassment cases reported by newspapers and media outlets, Southern University College, in collaboration with the Global Foon Yew Alumni Association and the main campus of Foon Yew High School, organized a two-day campus gender equality education forum titled “I Have the Power to Say No: Understanding Sexual Harassment.”

Key speakers for the forum included:

· Ms. Lim Wee Mei (Student Affairs Counsellor, Southern University College)

· Dr. Chua Yee Chii (Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology and Counselling, Southern University College)

· Ms. Koh Lian Kin (Foon Yew alumna and practicing lawyer)

The forum was moderated by Dr. Jess Chang (Part-Time Lecturer in Southern University College EMBA Program) for the Senior Middle 2 session, and Dr. Samuel Chan Hsin Chlen (Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology and Counselling, Southern University College) for the Senior Middle 3 session.

To better address students’ needs, the Student Life and Counseling Office of Foon Yew High School collected students’ questions on sexual harassment through an online survey prior to the forum. The speaker team then responded to these questions during the forum, tailoring their explanations to each grade level. In the Senior Middle 3 session, Ms. Lim Wee Mei introduced the concept of the “body traffic light” to help students recognize personal comfort levels and boundaries. In the Senior Middle 3 session, Dr. Chua Yee Chii encouraged students to speak up and protect themselves, emphasizing, “If something happens, it doesn’t mean you did something wrong.”

It is worth noting that approximately 1,600 students from the main campus of Foon Yew High School attended the seminar. Through this event, students gained a clearer understanding of what constitutes sexual harassment and how to respond to it, while also deepening their awareness of gender respect and self-protection. Additionally, both Southern University College and Foon Yew High School have pledged to continue promoting related education to foster a safer and more inclusive learning environment.
