China-Malaysia “The Belt And Road Initiative: Maritime Silk Road” International Conference

The Maritime Silk Road of The Belt and Road Initiative launched in 2013 by the China President Xi Jinping is an infrastructure development strategy aiming to promote the connectivity, establish and strengthen partnerships, and realize diversified, independent, balanced and sustainable development among the countries along the Belt and Road. Through the regional development, the strategy has great influence in promoting the collaboration of social, economic, and culture.

To promote the cultural communication and cooperation between China and Malaysia, and promote the construction of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, “the Belt and Road Initiative: Maritime Silk Road” International Conference has been jointly held by Huaqiao University and Malaysia Southern University College. The two universities take turns hosting the annual conference.

2022

The 6th China-Malaysia International Seminar on “the Belt and Road Initiative: The Maritime Silk Road”, jointly organized by Malaysia Southern University College and China Huaqiao University, is scheduled to be held on November 2022.

This year, Southern University College and China Huaqiao University invited the President of Han Culture Centre Malaysia, Dato’ Goh Hin San, the founder of the Mayapada Group, Dato’ Sri Ang Tjoen Ming (commonly known as Tahir), the director of National Institute of International Strategy (NISS), Professor Li Xiangyang and Dean of Maritime Silk Road Institute of Huaqiao University, Professor Xu Peiyuan as the keynote speakers to share insights of the Belt and Road.

2021

The 5th “The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI): Maritime Silk Road” International Academic Conference will be hosted by Southern University College on 26th November. Due to pandemic Covid-19, this conference will be conducted online for the first time. Experts and scholars will have in-depth discussions on the topic of China-Malaysia relations via Voov meeting.

2019

The 4th International Academic Conference “The Belt and Road Initiative: Maritime Silk Road” was jointly held by Southern University College and Huaqiao University on November 9th. Experts and scholars from various countries are invited to come from China to discuss in depth the political, economic, trade and cultural exchanges between China and Malaysia and ASEAN under the development of “The Belt and Road Initiative “.

The conference had invited YB Tan Kok Wai (Special Envoy of the Prime Minister to China), Dato Vincent Tan Meng Seng (Southern UC board of directors chairman), Professor. Zeng Lu (Vice President of Huaqiao University) and Professor Jia Yimin (former President of Huaqiao University) to attend opening ceremony and delivered speeches.

The conference was actively attended by experts and scholars from Malaysia and various universities and research institutions in China. Paper published and topics discussed included marine economic and trade investment, cultural exchanges and cooperation, and geopolitical relations between China and ASEAN.

2018

In 2018, the 3rd International Academic Conference “The Belt and Road Initiative: Maritime Silk Road” was held on November 10th at Southern University College. 

This year, the conference themed The Belt and Road Initiative: Maritime Silk Road and Asian Politics, Economy and Culture. Scholars and experts from various fields were invited to this conference to discuss and publish papers on the topics of economics, politics, and culture.

The conference invited Mr. Lim Kit Siang (Member of Parliament, DAP-Gelang Patah) to give an opening speech. President Jia Yimin of Huaqiao University, Researcher Xueli of Huaqiao University, Professor Onn Huann Jan, and Professor Wong Yoon Wah of Southern UC delivered keynote speeches for the conference. The conference last for two days and concluded at noon of November 11th.

2017

The 2nd International Academic Conference “The Belt and Road Initiative: Maritime Silk Road” was held at Huaqiao University, on November 25th.

The conferences invited around 50 scholars from China and Malaysia to discuss the topics on Maritime Silk Road with the investment environment, diplomatic security, and cross-cultural interaction in Southeast Asia.

2016

In the year 2016, on September 17th and 18th, the 1st international academic conference of “The Belt and Road Initiative: Maritime Silk Road” was held at Southern University College. The theme of the conference is “The Belt and Road Initiative: Maritime Silk Road and Southeast Asia”.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, YB Datuk Seri Ir. Dr. Wee Ka Siong is invited as the opening guest of the conference, and Datuk Tee Siew Kiong, The State Tourism, Domestic Trade, and Consumerism executive committee chairman invited as the closing guest. Keynote speakers include presidents of Southern UC and Huaqiao, Dr. Hou Kok Chung (the former deputy higher education minister), and Dr. Zhao Kejin (Vice Dean of the Department of International Relations of Tsinghua University).

More than 20 experts and scholars from various countries including Malaysia, Singapore, and China have published papers on the conference. The topics discussed covered economic and trade investment, cultural and educational construction, and cross-cultural interaction between the Belt and Road Initiative and Southeast Asia.
