The Introduction of Research Institute of Chinese Ethnicity and Culture (RICEC)

The Research Institute of Chinese Ethnicity and Culture (RICEC), Southern College, formerly named as The Research Centre of Chinese Ethnicity and Culture (2000-2003), was established in May, 2003. Prof. Tay Lian Soo, former and retired professor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, was invited as the first Director.

The aims of RICEC focus on four major aspects

Firstly, to compile a comprehensive historical file of Chinese Malaysians; secondly, to provide academic resources and research information for the students and lecturers of Southern College as well as the public; thirdly, to design new academic field through the organisation of various academic projects; and fourthly, to foster collaboration among academic researchers of different faculties.

Reorientation of the function of  RICEC strong

2.1) To restore the history by approaching ordinary folks
2.2) Paying back to society, sharing the resources
2.3) To popularize and promote academic studies

Reorientation of the function of Research Institute of Chinese Ethnicity and Culture (RICEC) requires awareness of the problem, keeping the history in mind. RICEC worked on data collected from ordinary folks to carry out research about Chinese culture. Its establishment aims to salvage, collect and enrich the history so that Chinese culture can be shown more accurately and clearly.

RICEC should not be influenced by common malpractices in academic or research fields. Since the data and information are collected from the community, the outcomes should be shared with everyone. This promotes inter-cultural exchange, keeping up with the current globalization and localization trend. Thus, reorientation of RICEC in accordance with objectives above is necessary.
