Filmmaking Talk with Director Chong Keat Aun: Preserving Culture Through Cinema

Southern University College Library, Malaysian Chinese Literature Centre, and Museum and Art Gallery recently co-hosted a filmmaking talk with director Chong Keat Aun at Lecture Hall 4A.Director Chong Keat Aun shared how his 19 years of research and cultural work helped him make his films. He said his movies often face problems with censorship because they talk about sensitive topics in Malaysian history, like ethnicity and religion. However, Chong is firm in his belief that movies are a way to talk with people. He will continue to use his films to show Malaysia’s culture and stories, and also asked everyone to help protect our country’s history and traditions.

由南方大学学院图书馆、马华文学馆、文物与艺术馆联合主办“在南巫凡世，走向国际影展——张吉安电影的双重凝视：从乡野民俗到宇宙想象的影像实践” 电影创作分享会，日前在南方大学学院4A讲堂顺利举行。分享会主讲人张吉安导演向在场听众分享自己如何以长达19年的田野调查与文化保育工作，成为其电影最核心的创作基石。然而，他也坦言，由于作品触及马来西亚历史中的族群、信仰与国界等复杂敏感议题，其电影屡次面临审查困境，尽管面对电影审查的挑战，张吉安导演依旧坚定自己的立场。他视电影为与社会与族群对话的媒介，即使面对重重阻碍，也会坚持用电影记录马来西亚的土地、文化与故事，同时也呼吁更多人关注和守护马来西亚的历史记忆与传统文化。
