Students from the Department of Journalism and Communication Studies, led by Ms. Lah Wan Yee, Senior Lecturer, participated in a field trip to Expo Kampung Baru on 24 October 2025, an event showcasing the spirit, heritage, and creativity of Malaysia’s new villages (kampung baru) in Central and Southern regions. The visit aimed to help students understand Event-Based Public Relations (PR) and Community Engagement, particularly how local cultures can be communicated through engaging and creative methods. Through observing the event’s layout, promotions, and activities, students gained practical exposure to how communication strategies are applied to highlight cultural identity and attract diverse audiences.
During the visit, students also conducted interviews with organizers, vendors, and visitors to gain first-hand insights into the initiatives behind the expo, the passion for promoting hometown products and traditions, and the visitors’ overall experiences. This hands-on experience enriched students’ understanding of real-world PR and journalism practices, bridging classroom learning with industry application. The trip provided valuable lessons on how media and communication professionals can creatively represent and preserve local culture through effective community-based events.
