Nurturing Young Media Talents at the 2026 “Lens on the World” Media Camp

The Department of Journalism and Communication Studies successfully co-organized the 2026 “Lens on the World” Media Camp, a three-day two-night programme held from 29 to 31 May 2026 at Southern University College. The camp aimed to enhance youths’ journalism interviewing skills and media literacy while cultivating critical thinking and social awareness.

A total of 46 students from 15 secondary schools across Malaysia participated in the camp. The programme encouraged participants to develop independent critical thinking in an era of fragmented information. The camp featured five professionals from the media industry and academia who conducted workshops, sharing sessions, and practical training. Participants gained valuable insights into journalism, interviewing techniques, news reporting, media ethics, and media literacy.

During the media camp, Deputy Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament for Iskandar Puteri, Johor, YB Liew Chin Tong, Member of Parliament for Kluang, YB Wong Shu Qi, and Chairman of Southern University College, Dato’ Vincent Tan Meng Seng attended the programme and graced the closing ceremony. They shared words of encouragement with the participants and emphasized the importance of media education in fostering critical thinking and social responsibility among young people.

The camp was the result of months of preparation by Ms. Lah Wan Yee and Mr. Lee Jia Xing together with 10 student volunteers from the Department of Journalism and Communication Studies to ensure the smooth implementation of the programme. The media camp reflected Southern University College’s commitment to nurturing informed, responsible, and critically minded young individuals who are better equipped to navigate today’s complex media environment.

南方大学学院新闻与传播学系于2026年5月29日至31日成功协办为期三天两夜董总主办的《看见世界方程式》媒体营。本次活动旨在提升青少年的新闻采访技巧与媒体素养，并培养他们的批判性思维能力及社会关怀意识。

本届媒体营共吸引来自全马15所中学的46位学生参与。此活动鼓励学员在资讯碎片化的时代中建立独立思考能力，学会从不同角度分析社会现象。媒体营邀请了5位来自媒体业界及学术界的专业人士担任讲师，通过讲座、工作坊及实践活动，与学员分享新闻采访、媒体报道、媒体伦理及媒体识读等知识与经验。学员不仅能够学习理论知识，更有机会透过实作练习提升采访与沟通能力，并与来自全国各地的同龄人交流学习。

媒体营期间，财政部副部长兼柔佛依斯干达公主城国会议员YB刘镇东、居銮区国会议员YB黄书琪，以及南方大学学院董事长拿督陈洺臣亲临活动现场，并出席闭幕典礼，为学员们送上鼓励与勉励。他们肯定媒体教育对于培养青年批判思维与社会责任感的重要性，并鼓励学生积极关注社会议题，善用媒体力量为社会带来正面影响。

此次媒体营由新闻与传播学系主任林婉仪高级讲师及李家兴高级讲师数个月来的筹备与协调工作，同时也获得10位新闻与传播学系学生积极参与协助。媒体营体现了南方大学学院培养具批判思维、社会责任感与国际视野青年人才的教育理念。
