Field Trip and Collaboration with Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA)

On 5 December 2024, a total of 33 students from the Department of Journalism and Communication Studies (DJC), accompanied by Head of Department, Mrs. Nur Nadirah Syaira Md Nazir and Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed Arandas, embarked on a field trip to the Strategic Communication Division of the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA).
The primary objectives of this field trip were to provide hands-on learning experiences for the students, enhance classroom instruction by bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical fieldwork and cultivate observational and analytical skills among the participants.
Upon arrival, the delegates were warmly welcomed by the IRDA representatives, Mr. Sazli Zakaria, Director of Operational Excellence, Ms. Goh Wee Ling, Vice President of Stakeholder Management and Ms. Wan Nursyaza Ismail, Assistant Vice President of Strategic Communication.
The session began with an informative talk delivered by IRDA team members. They provided an in-depth overview of the Strategic Communication Division, highlighting its role, objectives, and impact on regional development. The presentation also emphasized the importance of strategic communication in fostering relationships with stakeholders, managing public perception, and driving community engagement.
A dedicated question-and-answer session allowed students to engage directly with the speakers, gaining valuable insights into the practical applications of strategic communication and its challenges.
The field trip was highly productive, fostering a strong foundation for collaboration between DJC and IRDA. A preliminary agreement was discussed to facilitate internship placements for DJC students at IRDA and open the pathways for hands-on professional experience.
The collaboration with IRDA reflects the Department of Journalism and Communication Studies’ commitment to providing students with valuable industry exposure and preparing them for future professional roles. The field trip underscored the importance of linking academic learning with industry practices and set a precedent for future collaborations.
The Department extends its heartfelt gratitude to IRDA for their warm hospitality and generous sharing of knowledge, and we look forward to building a long-term partnership for mutual growth and success.
