Education Outcome and objectives

The Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (Honours) at Southern University College is a cross-disciplinary programme aim at providing graduates with skills, knowledge and attitudes that are essential for a successful, effective and committed early childcare practitioner and early childhood educator. The Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (Honours) combines pedagogical-educational study in early childhood education with liberal education in the area of academic subject specialization.

The main objective of the program is to develop teacher educator candidates at pre-school and primary school levels who:

  • Possess sound professional pedagogical knowledge base required of early childhood educator
  • Are competent, resourceful, creative and innovative in managing classroom and instructional process and strategies for early childhood education 
  • Familiar with the different early childhood program models and programmes
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge in the following areas: child abuse and neglect; nutrition, health and safety; science, mathematics and art education; infant and toddler care; and interrelationships between the family
  • Are committed to their students and to student learning, being sensitive to learner diversity and individual differences
  • Seek to collaborate with the learning community in advocating advancement in education, and constantly seeking to create learning opportunities for themselves and their students
  • Are committed to continuing reflection on lifelong learning and the importance of continuous learning to improve skills, knowledge and ability for the betterment of the learning community
  • Possess critical, analytical and creative problem-solving skills and attitude and apply them through Practicum, Teaching Practice or Internship

The Learning Outcomes of Program

Upon completion of the program, students should be able to:

  • gain sound professional pedagogical understanding of the basic principles of education and their implications in managing classroom instructional process and strategies for communicating effectively in the classroom
  • design, develop, apply and implement learning experiences and instructional practices for early childhood learning and childcare practice
  • apply multiple intelligences and use electronic/ICT tools to locate resources to synthesize information for application in the educational process
  • apply assessment strategies to monitor child growth and learning, providing  relevant guidance & counseling and taking into consideration learner diversity and individual differences
  • acquire basic knowledge and proficiency in the following childcare issues: child abuse and neglect; nutrition, health and safety; early childhood literacy science, mathematics and art; infant and toddler care; interrelationships between the family and childcare institutions
  • manage play and creative arts (visual/media art, music, dance & drama) in early childhood learning
  • collaborate with the learning community in advocating advancement in education, and constantly seeking to create learning opportunities for themselves and their students
  • commit to continuing reflection on lifelong learning and the importance of continuous learning to improve skills, knowledge and ability for the betterment of the learning community

Teaching Characteristics and Lectures:

The Department of Early Childhood Education hires experienced pre-school teachers and principals to conduct courses for students. The department also works with pre-schools to provide students with a learning platform, where they may learn practical skills. The teachers will teach students in their areas of expertise; they also take students to the industry for experiential learning.  The department will also invite experts in early childhood education to conduct classes or give professional talks. It provides students with a platform for multi-dimensional learning. Teaching is done in small groups, and students receive full attention and meticulous guidance. The department prides itself in emphasizing quality and not quantity

Graduate Employment:

Graduates of our program enter careers as teachers of early child education and kindergarten teachers, researchers, directors of early childhood programmes or day-care centres. They may also take up positions as child development consultants, administrators, art teachers, founders of childcare/infant nurseries, developers of teaching materials and toys for young children, etc. As educators trained in this programme will be highly skilled at working with people, organizing and planning, and coping with stressful situations – these skills are also valuable in many careers. Thus, apart from working with children and young people, there are other possibilities inside and outside the education sector, such as human resource training departments in private firms and international conglomerates, online media learning services, and etc.

Admission Requirement

  • Pass STPM - minimum 2 passes or CGPA 2.0 or
  • Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) – minimum 5B’s or
  • Pass Matriculation / Foundation / A-level – minimum CGPA 2.0 or
  • Pass relevant diploma – minimum CGPA 2.0 or
  • Any other equivalent

Duration of Study

3-year full time course (Total credits required: 122 credits)
